The conference will take a look at where <b<coal-fired generation could be headed in the future</b<. <b<U.S. Energy Association Chairman John Derrick</b<, the Chairman and CEO of <b<Pepco</b<, is among those scheduled to speak. <p<Look for <b<energy legislation to move to the forefront when lawmakers return from Thanksgiving break</b<. Republicans in the Senate say they want to take action on energy legislation in December, while Democrats aren't as sure of the time frame. Next week, the Washington bureau will bring us an <b<update on where legislation</b< stands and what the chances are that we'll see a <b<comprehensive energy bill</b< before the end of the year. <p<The <b<North American Electric Reliability Council</b< will release its <b<2001/2002 Winter Assessment</b< on Tuesday; our Washington bureau will bring us coverage. <p<If <b<MTBE</b< is banned, the <b<gasoline industry</b< will have to drastically <b<increase production of ethanol</b<. On Monday, the Houston bureau's <br<Gale Smith will have a report on some companies looking at <b<alternative ways of making ethanol</b<. We'll find out which products have a chance at becoming a substitute for MTBE. <p<A recent poll taken by <b<Deloitte & Touche</b< says <b<power deregulation in Texas won't mean an immediate rate reduction for consumers</b<. The Houston bureau will have more from Deloitte & Touche's <b<Branko Terzic</b< on Monday. <p<ENL's Kym McNicholas reports the <b<California Power Authority is meeting</b< over the weekend to discuss the scope and direction of its <b<Energy Resource Investment Plan</b<. The plan is due to the legislature and to the governor by February 15, 2002. Kym will bring us the latest on Monday from the weekend meeting. <p<Also on Monday, the <b<California Energy Commission</b< will hear a <b<petition</b< for reconsideration of its decision on <b<Calpine's proposed Metcalf Energy Center</b<. After the meeting we'll have comments from the <b<counsel to the petitioners Stephan Volker</b<. <p<<b<Jolen Operating Company President David Fleischaker</b< will speak with us from Oklahoma City on Monday. He'll give us a <b<status check of energy legislation</b< and discuss what he feels is the real <b<problem behind Enron</b<. We'll hear from Fleischaker during the 2:00 p.m. ET newscast. <p<From Dallas on Monday, <b<RBC Capital Markets Director <br<Mark Easterbrook</b< is joining us. Easterbrook will talk about the performance and outlook for <b<Master Limited Partnerships</b< in the energy industry and which investors are suited to buy MLPs.
