COMPANIES CRACK DOWN on the increasing sexual harassment by e-mail.

Using computer-monitoring devices provided by Enron Software Inc.,
Burlington, Mass., 20th Century Fox scans employees' e-mail to stop the flow
of sexually offensive messages, says Jeff Uslan, manager of information
protection. After an e-mail harassment incident, Image First, a New Castle,
Del., uniforms maker, notified workers that e-mail will be reviewed for any
violation of its antiharassment policy.

Fully 31% of more than 1,000 human-resources officials surveyed by
Philadelphia labor-relations lawyer Stephen Cabot and the American Management
Association reported that employees have sometimes gotten sexually harassing
e-mails; 85% of the employers have policies to avert problems. Employers
including First Union Corp., Charlotte, N.C., have fired people recently for
sending harassing e-mail.

Unlike in-person conduct, e-mail harassment is easy to prove since the
electronic trail documents allegations, says Kathleen Neville, a
sexual-harassment consultant.
