Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and
Transportation Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere and Fisheries, on
Thursday cited statistics showing that since 1988, automakers used more
than 60 percent of the advanced technology available to them to increase
power and acceleration, but only 8 percent to improve fuel economy, figures
he said highlight the need to mandate higher federal fuel economy standards.
